Honoring Juneteenth: Advancing Health Justice Together

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and honors the generations of Black leaders, advocates, and communities whose perseverance and vision have shaped our nation.

At PHIMC, we recognize that Juneteenth is both a celebration and a reminder that the pursuit of freedom, equity, and opportunity continues. Our mission to advance health justice is grounded in the understanding that where people live, learn, work, and age profoundly affects their health and well-being.

As our Chief Program Officer, Dr. Dan’iel Kendricks, recently shared with VP Chicago, significant differences in life expectancy across Chicago neighborhoods reflect decades of structural inequities—not individual choices. Access to quality housing, healthcare, education, transportation, and economic opportunity remains uneven, contributing to disparities that continue to affect Black communities and other historically marginalized populations.

Addressing these inequities requires more than programs alone. It requires partnership, community leadership, and a shared commitment to creating systems that are equitable, affirming, and responsive to people’s needs. Across Illinois, PHIMC works alongside community organizations, healthcare providers, public agencies, schools, advocates, and residents to strengthen health outcomes and expand opportunities for all communities to thrive.

This Juneteenth, we celebrate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black communities while reaffirming our commitment to advancing health justice and confronting the barriers that prevent people from reaching their full potential.

We invite you to join in celebrating Juneteenth by participating in events, educational programs, and community gatherings hosted by many of PHIMC’s partner organizations.

Together, we can honor the past, engage in the present, and help build a future where health, opportunity, and belonging are within reach for everyone.

Happy Juneteenth from all of us at PHIMC.
