Transgender people and law enforcement interactions: Rights and Realities

This guide is intended to briefly outline your rights when it comes to interacting with law enforcement officers and share some examples of the reality that law enforcement officers often disregard peoples’ rights. This guide is designed for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people, but a lot of the information will be helpful to others. This guide is not intended to replace your life experience, common sense, or ability to determine what makes you safest in any particular situation. You know best how to keep yourself safe, so trust your instincts. If you know you will have to interact with law enforcement, it is best to have trusted friends and family accompany you or be prepared to provide you support. We keep us safe.

Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois

TJLP consists of a group of folks who believe in the power of communal care over systemic oppression. We are radical activists, legal workers, and organizers who provide support, advocacy, and free, holistic legal services to poor and street-based transgender people in Illinois.

We use our legal access and our privilege as people on the outside to further the prison abolition movement. We work in three project areas: legal services, support community survival, and educational resources and trainings.

Let’s Talk About It: A Transgender Survivor’s Guide to Accessing Therapy

While many transgender people see individual therapists, choosing and working with a therapist can be more complex for the half of transgender people who are also sexual assault survivors. This 107-page guide addresses many of the specific questions trans survivors ask: how to decide if therapy is right for you and, if it is, how to choose the best type of therapy for you, and how to find referrals and choose a therapist. The guide also discusses trans-specific survivor issues such as dealing with Standards of Care issues; addressing shame and body image/dysphoria issues; and navigating sex-segregated services.
