National Health Corps Chicago – Service Term Celebration

For many years, PHIMC has partnered with community organizations across Chicago to support and train tomorrow’s compassionate health leaders through National Health Corps Chicago. Together, we have worked to build a public health workforce with skills, tools, and insights to uplift the strengths and meet the needs of our communities.

For the 2024-2025 service term, National Health Corps Chicago, a program of NHC, was administered by Health Federation of Philadelphia (HFP) and implemented by Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC).

NHC Chicago members were paired with host sites to address social determinants of health that may not otherwise be possible due to a lack of adequate funding, staffing, and resources. NHC Chicago members have helped to increase access to care for underserved populations, provide health education, develop tools and curricula, conduct community outreach, and link people to care for both mental and physical health. NHC Chicago members also serve to build each host organization’s capacity in a way that lasts beyond their term of service.

PHIMC is thrilled to have worked with yet another cohort of passionate and compassionate health leaders for the 2024-2025 service term.

The 2024-2025 member cohort served 3,495 NEW clients this past year by educating on nutrition and well-being, addressing substance use prevention, and providing referrals to community resources in patient navigation to youth and adults in Chicagoland. This included:

  • 692 increasing physical activity and improving nutrition
  • 2,226 in health education
  • 516 patient navigation/coordination

“NHC Chicago members have accomplished so much and I believe none of us will ever know the depth of the impact of their terms of service. Wishing nothing but the best as members go on to achieve amazing things and a thank you to the organizations and communities that hosted them this past year. NHC Chicago members, YOU have left a mark on everyone you have met during your term and please realize how much of a special opportunity that is. Looking forward to next steps and updates!”

“I'm proud and inspired by our National Health Corps Chicago members and host sites for their impact on public health with PHIMC. As an AmeriCorps alum and program leader, I've seen firsthand how they expand access and education for under-resourced communities in Chicago. I’m grateful for the chance to mentor future leaders, while learning the value of collaboration, conflict resolution, resource management, and problem-solving in public health. I'm optimistic about the future of NHC Chicago alums and partners as they continue to build solutions. Congratulations to each of you — your dedication uplifts us all!"

~ Alisha Jani, PHIMC Program Manager for AmeriCorps – National Health Corps Chicago
