Illinois Eagle: Rainbow Café hosts second GSA Summit

The Illinois Safe Schools Alliance was proud to participate in Rainbow Café’s GSA Summit on Indigenous Peoples’ Day. As reported in The Illinois Eagle by Benito Goff:

Gay-Straight or Gender-Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) are important student-led organizations at all school levels that give LGBTQI students a place to both be themselves and advocate for their rights…

All public school students have the federal right to have a GSA, as long as they have any other non-curriculum club (ex. Chess Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes) because of the Equal Access Act (EAA).

GSAs and LGBTQ-centered clubs can’t be required to undergo additional paperwork, barriers, or requirements than other clubs. Sschools can’t require students to get parental permission to join GSA but not Basketball Club, nor can they let Christian Club use the school bulletin board but not GSA. While a public school is allowed to ban all hats at school, they can’t single out only rainbow hats. Policies must be equally enforced throughout the district…
