Who is National Health Corps?
National Health Corps (NHC) believes in the mission of fostering healthy communities by connecting those who need it most with health and wellness education, benefits, and services while developing tomorrow’s compassionate health leaders. NHC envisions a nation where all people can access the services and knowledge necessary to lead healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives.
NHC partners with organizations in its service communities as host sites and outside service partners. NHC members serve at host sites on a full-time schedule for an entire service term and fulfill an established service position that adds unique value to the host site organization.
NHC members are dedicated, dynamic, hard-working people with different backgrounds and experiences who are ready to commit nearly a year of their lives to service. Members also earn service hours for participating in committees, other individual or group volunteer opportunities, training, professional development activities, and more!
Why host a National Health Corps Chicago member?
As a service provider or someone involved with a mission-driven organization grappling with the impact of a global pandemic, you may face challenges related to growing service needs, budgetary constraints, and demands for the expansion and transformation of delivery systems.
National Health Corps members produce significant and unique contributions that address these challenges while enhancing Host Sites’ efforts to address social determinants of health and underlying structural oppression that would not otherwise be possible due to the lack of adequate funding, staffing, and resources.
NHC Chicago members can — for example — support COVID vaccine and contract tracing efforts, increase access to care for underserved populations, provide health education, develop tools and curricula, conduct community outreach, link people to care for both mental and physical health, and in many other ways address the social determinants of health specific to your community. NHC AmeriCorps members also work to build your organization’s capacity in a way that lasts beyond their term of service.
Host Site Organizations can be:
- Community-based health centers
- School-based health centers
- Public health departments
- Community-based organizations
- Other non-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, and government entities within a state, territory, or Indian Tribe that provide services addressing social determinants of health
Host Site Requirements
- Host sites should be excited about guiding and supporting NHC Chicago members in doing meaningful activities that add value for the host site and its community members.
- Host sites must apply for a member to serve at their organization, and must create position descriptions for members that describe the member’s planned activities. NHC staff can help you with this!
- Host sites are required to make a financial contribution to support the member’s living stipend and operational costs of the program. NHC funding heavily supplements this contribution.
- Host sites must complete the reporting and administrative requirements of the program. These include conducting member performance reviews, approving member timesheets, and participating in site visits with NHC staff.
