Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC)

Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC) seeks applications from organizations interested in hosting AmeriCorps members for 2022-2023 as part of the National Health Corps Chicago (NHC Chicago) program. Applicants may apply to host more than one AmeriCorps member.

We are excited that members can support the work of host sites in new ways this year — thanks, in part, to the feedback we and our peers around the country have received.

Why host an AmeriCorps member?

As a service provider or someone involved with a mission-driven organization in the middle of a global pandemic, you are likely experiencing challenges related to growing service needs, budgetary constraints, and new demands for the expansion and transformation of delivery systems.

National Health Corps members produce significant and unique contributions that address these challenges and enhance Host Sites’ efforts to address social determinants of health and underlying structural oppression that would not otherwise be possible due to the lack of adequate funding, staffing, and resources.

AmeriCorps members with NHC Chicago can — for example — support COVID vaccine and contract tracing efforts, increase access to care for underserved populations, provide health education, develop tools and curricula, conduct community outreach, link people to care for both mental and physical health, and in many other ways address the social determinants of health specific to your community. NHC AmeriCorps members also work to build your organization’s capacity in a way that lasts beyond their term of service.

Benefits include:

  • A consistent member with a strong skill set for up to 11 months, increasing your organizational capacity to address critical needs
  • Support for host site supervisors and ongoing technical assistance from PHIMC program staff
  • Networking and collaboration opportunities with other host sites
  • Member training and professional development from PHIMC program staff and outside experts, including motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, conflict resolution, and communication
  • Opportunity to hire individuals with lived experience
  • Administrative tasks related to recruitment and placement led by NHC and PHIMC

Host sites can be:

  • Community-based health centers
  • School-based health centers
  • Public health departments
  • Community-based organizations
  • Other non-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, and government entities within a state, territory, or Indian Tribe that provide services addressing social determinants of health

National Health Corps aims to:

  • Decrease health disparities through addressing social determinants of health, including underlying structural oppression, in communities plagued by histories of racial and economic inequities;
  • Improve organizational efficiencies, community engagement, and reach of services addressing social determinants of health; and
  • Decrease barriers for people who are Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), and other identities who have been historically under-represented in health leadership (women, LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities, etc.) to become healthcare and/or public health leaders in the future.

Eligibility

PHIMC partners with host site organizations that align with the mission of NHC Chicago, have capacity to support an AmeriCorps member, and commit to providing a meaningful service experience.

Applicants must:

  • Be a 501(c)(3) public or private nonprofit organization, institution of higher education, government entity within a state or territory, Indian Tribe, or a partnership/consortium
  • Provide a cash contribution per full-time member, according to the sliding scale described below
